Legality of Connecting to the Phone

You are licensed to use Retell's products under the general "Self Provision License". You are safe with Retell's products! For your background information as none of Retell's telephone conversation recorders can make a connection ('interwork') with the public telecommunications system they do not have to be approved under section 22 of the Telecommunications Act. Products that do electrically connect, for example by plugging into the telephone socket have to be approved in the UK by BABT and then they will carry a green circle logo. Unapproved equipment has to carry a red triangle and is prohibited from direct or indirect connection to public telecommunication systems. Action may be taken against anyone so connecting such equipment. But don't worry, you are safe with Retell.

Legality of Recording

Oftel says that you should make every reasonable effort to inform all parties to a call that it may or will be recorded, silently monitored or intruded into. It is up to you how you do this. Acceptable options, depending on the circumstances, might include warning tones, pre0recorded messages, spoken warnings by the operator or written warnings included in pulicity material, telephone directories, contracts, terms of business, staff notices etc. It may not always be possible to warn first-time callers with whom you have had no previous contact but what is important is that you have a systematic procedure in place which provides the necessary information where this is a realistic possibility.
